Stefon Harris - African Tarantella: Dances With Duke



En las notas incluidas en el disco, Stefon Harris transcribe la siguiente cita de Duke Ellington, que resume el espíritu de este álbum: "No se trata de esta generación o aquella. La cuestión en el arte es la regeneración". African Tarantella contiene composiciones pertenecientes a dos suites de Duke Ellington: New Orleans Suite (1970) y The Queen's Suite (1958), y una propia de Harris: The Gardner Meditations. Un noneto que integran, entre otros: el clarinetista Greg Tardy, el trombonista Steve Turre y el baterista Terreon Gully, quienes lucen con sus solos en Thanks for the Beautiful Land on the Delta, Portrait of Wellman Braud y Dancing Enigma, respectivamente, agrega color a piezas que transmiten diferentes estados de ánimo, a excepción de la sugerente The Single Petal of a Rose, interpretada por un trio de vibráfono, chelo y contrabajo. Un jazz un tanto amable, pero también una fresca relectura de la obra menos recorrida de un compositor clásico. ****

Having only heard Stefon on the radio once I gave this a try. This is top drawer modern jazz with strong roots in the tradition, but not afraid to take a few chances. I'm encouraged to catch up with his recordings and follow his career as he clearly has a bright future ahead!
