Kenny Garrett - Black Hope
Black Hope es una demostración cabal de las enormes habilidades en el saxofón de Kenny Garrett, interpretación que además acostumbra ser animada y atrayente, tanto en el alto (tomar nota del feroz contrapunto con el gran Joe Henderson en Computer "G"; el tremendo solo en Jackie & the Bean Stalk; y la bluseada Last Sax, a cappella); como en el soprano (Van Gogh's Left Ear; Black Hope (un lindo instrumental que recuerda a Marvin Gaye y la música del sello Motown); Run Run Shaw; Bon Bop).
Black Hope es su segundo álbum, publicado en 1992, incluyendo piezas de estricto jazz (las que participa Joe Henderson); y otras más poperas (Run Run Shaw), o hip-hoperas (Bone Bop), infaltables en el repertorio del saxofonista; por cierto, un tanto flojas (vgr., Van Gogh's Left Ear, Run Run Shaw, 2 Step), rescatadas del naufragio precisamente por las probadas dotes de Garrett y sus excelentes acompañantes: Kenny Kirkland, piano; Charnett Mofett, contrabajo; Brian Blade, batería (reemplazado por Ricky Wellman en 2 Step y Bone Bop); Don Alias en percusión.

A las composiciones de Kenny Garrett se suma una agitada versión de Bye Bye Blackbird (Ray Henderson), casi una definición de su estilo: swingeante; energético; liviano pero afirmado en una ejecución súper solida; aficionado a ritmos populares de corte pasatista.
Considérese la diferente entonación de Henderson, que a pesar de no ser un tradicionalista, sino más bien lo contrario; y de haber grabado discos orientados a la fusión con el rock y el funk en los '70s para el sello Milestone; tiene un enfoque y un color en su instrumento más próximos a la ortodoxia.****
